2016 Big Breaks

When I sat down to write this, my intention was to write a wrap up of all the cool things that I was able to be a part of this year and then I remembered something I read:

"I hope you can focus less on the story you tell yourself about your own specialness and as a result focus more on the world-changing work you set out to achieve." - Ryan Holiday, Ego is the Enemy

That's why I decided to incorporate these quotes and how they impacted my year instead:

2016 Quotes on my Desktop:

"Lack of opportunity will not be what kills you, drowning in 7 out of 10 "cool" commitments will sink the ship." - Tim Ferriss

"Never give reasons for what you think or do until you must, maybe after awhile a better reason will pop into your head." - William T. Shurman

"Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less." - Robert Green

"Stay in proximity, but resist the urge to force it." - Lucas Miles

2016 Big Breaks:

Donald Trump California Primary

The field director job only came because of connections forged back in 2014 and the ability to "stay in proximity" and "say less than necessary."

Rodeo Girl Hitting Netflix

When I started down the path of investing in and producing this movie, people thought it was strange that I wanted to work in politics and entertainment. Because of that, I chose to, "not give a reason for what I was thinking" and just do my best to manage both until it was absolutely necessary to begin talking about it.

Sacred Steel Bikes Co-Star

My good friend from home coincidently watched the show before I made the announcement I had booked it and he didn't even notice me in it even though I had a few pieces of dialogue. This was funny and humbling at the same time. It was a reminder that life isn't about "the story you tell yourself about your own specialness," it's about "the world-changing work you set out to achieve."

Darrell Issa Congressional Campaign

I had the connections to work on this campaign, I had the skill set to work on this campaign, and as a bonus I just moved to live inside the district of this campaign. I "stayed in proximity and resisted the urge to force it" until the powers that be gave me the call.

Stealing Sunrise 2: Malibu Trail Supporting Role

Many times this year, opportunities have come up where I've had to make a quick decision on whether I was available or not. This feature film supporting role was no different and as an added bonus I met one of the top indie film producers in Arizona. I kept a flexible schedule by not getting attached to "cool but unhelpful time commitments" and was able to be on set the next day after booking the role.

Final Thoughts

This whole year has been one long example of an even older quote that I remind myself of often. In the book of John, the apostle writes about Jesus saying that "he came so that we could have life and have it to the full." That is incredible to me. Life is not meant to be boring, Jesus' literal purpose in coming to earth and interacting with humanity was so that we could have a fulfilled life. That is great news and I feel that I was able to take a part a little bit this year in a fulfilled life. I hope you were as well!
