Just Loaded Bitcoin on an Opendime for the First Time

From pictures I saw online of them the end looked smaller than a normal USB drive so I thought I needed a second special device to use one. Not true, works in normal USB slot on normal computer.

Opendime USB Stick.jpg

Open this by clicking on it just like a regular USB drive.

Next click on the thing the instructions say to click on “index.htm”. It’s just a button like a file that opens your browser. Don’t care or need to know what index.htm means.

Here's the next instructions that pop up in browser. I had to re read this a couple times to understand. Here's what it means translated:

"Copy a random picture onto the thumbdrive like you would do with any other thumbdrive, doesn't matter what the picture is"

Take @OPENDIME out of USB slot and refresh the browser page. Your bitcoin receive address and QR code will pop up. Now you can deposit to your OpenDime just like sending a regular #bitcoin transaction.

Here’s a realization I’ve been coming to recently:

The way you perceive #bitcoin and what you can do with it and what it’s good for is greatly influenced by the wallets and exchanges that we interact with

We need to demand more from our wallet software and more from exchanges

When I was only thinking about bitcoin as savings technology I didn’t want to spend money on acquiring an OpenDime and learning how to use it

I couldn’t figure out why I would need or use it

I played the hard money vs easy money speech in my head content to just hodl

Coronavirus and the government caused financial crisis where our human rulers decided who is essential and who is not telling us to stay in our pods and making commerce illegal has been a huge shock to my world view

This made me start asking myself and others if there was more I could do with #bitcoin

I realized the way I was using it was mainly just as a USD savings vehicle.

I was using it as a way to “hedge” like gold but better is what I told myself

The way I was using #bitcoin I was still attached to the system

I’m still attached to a government that hates me and has proven it by taking away liberty and freedom that I entrusted them to protect

They broke the social contract and I want to opt out

The same thing happened to me w/ @SamouraiWallet that just happened to me with @OPENDIME

I thought it was too hard to avoid chain surveillance

I thought using sw was for other bitcoiners, not me

They have an approachable live chat

Using #bitcoin outside the system is for you

Spending a few sats and possibly losing a few sats to learn how to use better wallet software is worth it

It’s worth it to learn how to use #bitcoin and learn how to be free

The ability to do commerce with who you want and when you want is here and possible

Hodl is good. Hodl til moon is good.

Saving and living below your means is a counter cultural act.

Keep doing it. Learn personal finance. Learn to save. Teach your kids to save.

Don’t hold your sats so tight that you stop learning about #bitcoin though.
